Teaching C.S. Lewis in the NI Classroom

Using Belfast's most famous author across the curriculum

C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast. Here's how to use his life and work across the World Around Us, Language and Literacy, and Arts Areas of Learning.

C.S. Lewis is arguably Northern Ireland's most significant literary figure — and the connection between his Belfast origins and the world of Narnia offers remarkable cross-curricular opportunities.

Why Lewis belongs in NI classrooms

Most children in NI classrooms will have read or watched Narnia. Many will not know that its author was born in east Belfast, that the hills he could see from his childhood bedroom directly inspired the landscape of Narnia, that he is now commemorated in bronze statues in the CS Lewis Square near his birthplace.

Curriculum connections

Language and Literacy: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is accessible and rich from P4 upwards. Themes (good vs evil, sacrifice, redemption, belonging) are ideal for discussion. Lewis's imagery is precise and beautiful — excellent for language study.

The World Around Us — Local History: researching Lewis's Belfast — Dundela Villas, Little Lea, Campbell College — is a genuine local history investigation. Using historical maps of east Belfast.

The World Around Us — Geography: the Mountains of Mourne, visible from east Belfast, that Lewis described as the landscape of his imagination. Map work, landscape photography, field trips.

PDMU: the themes of belonging, difference, and community in Narnia offer gentle PDMU entry points. How do different characters find their place? Who is excluded and why?

The Arts: illustrate a scene from Narnia. Design a coat of arms for Narnia. Write a soundtrack for the wardrobe scene. Perform a scene as drama.
