Continuous provision — EYFS

  1. 1 What is continuous provision? The learning environments and resources available for children to access independently throughout the session. The areas of provision (sand, water, construction, role play, mark-making, book area, maths, small world, outdoor) are the medium through which children learn.
  2. 2 The adult role in CP Not to manage the provision — to enhance it. Join children's play and extend it. Model mathematical thinking, vocabulary, early mark-making. Ask open questions. Not to direct play — to interact with it.
  3. 3 Planning in the moment Rather than planning weeks ahead what will happen in provision, practitioners observe what children are doing and extend it in real time. A child making towers becomes an opportunity for number, engineering, vocabulary.
  4. 4 Characteristics of effective learning Playing and exploring (finding out, experiencing). Active learning (concentrating, persisting). Creating and thinking critically (having ideas, making links). These characteristics underpin all learning in EYFS.
  5. 5 Observation Watch before interacting. What is the child actually doing? What do they understand? What are they trying to work out? The observation informs the interaction — you respond to what the child is doing, not what you planned.
  6. 6 Enhancements Small changes to provision based on observed interests or learning needs. If children are interested in builders, add hard hats and clipboards to the construction area. Low-prep, high-impact.
  7. 7 Outdoor provision Outdoor learning is not an add-on — it is as educationally significant as indoor. Physical development. Risk and challenge. Scientific inquiry (weather, nature, growing). Larger-scale mark-making and construction. Children who struggle indoors often thrive outdoors.
