For Maths Leads
The operational toolkit, not just curriculum content.
Whole-school maths progression. Calculation policy decision guide. Manipulatives audit and setup. Fluency-versus-reasoning balance. Times tables strategy through the Y4 MTC and beyond. Monitoring walk prompts. Six 20-minute CPD sessions ready to deliver. The handover doc when you leave the role. Built for the person running maths across the school.
Maths Lead work is held by people doing it on top of everything else. You're a class teacher, often deputy or assistant head, and the Maths Lead hat sits on top. The role spans the calculation policy across all year groups, the Y4 Multiplication Tables Check, KS2 SATs maths (three papers, 50% of the SATs total), the manipulatives across every classroom, and the staff team's confidence — including the teachers who carry their own maths anxiety from school.
Most published Maths Lead resources are curriculum content — schemes of work, lesson plans, year group resources. LessonKind provides those too. But this page is about the OPERATIONAL stuff that's harder to find: the whole-school progression maps, the calculation policy decision guide, the manipulatives audit, the times tables strategy, the monitoring walk prompts, the CPD that actually changes practice.
What's in the Maths Lead toolkit
The Maths Lead Toolkit collection contains 8 substantial resources covering the operational layer of the role.
- Whole-school progression doc — maths skill progression Pre-K to Y6 across number, calculation, fractions, geometry, statistics, and reasoning
- Fluency vs reasoning guide — settles the staffroom debate; specific routines for each
- Calculation policy decision guide — comparing the major approaches (commercial schemes vs school-developed) with implementation timelines
- Manipulatives audit and setup — what every classroom needs, why upper KS2 still benefits, addressing the "manipulatives are for younger children" problem
- Times tables strategy — year-by-year teaching sequence, daily routines, MTC preparation, what to do for children who fall behind
- Monitoring walk prompts — what to look for in 10-minute classroom visits without it feeling like inspection
- CPD pack for class teachers — six 20-minute INSET sessions ready to deliver, including a session on addressing maths anxiety in staff
- Handover document — for when you leave the role and want the next person not to start from scratch

Free resources for Maths Leads
Three resources from the toolkit are completely free — no signup required. They're the foundational documents:
- Whole-School Maths Progression — year-by-year skill development across all strands
- Fluency vs Reasoning Guide — both, not one or the other
- Monitoring Walk Prompts — for your first round of classroom visits
The deeper resources — calculation policy guide, manipulatives audit, times tables strategy, CPD pack, handover doc — are member-only. They're the kind of infrastructure that turns "I'm new to this role" into "I know what I'm doing".
Why a Maths Lead membership is worth it
Maths Leads typically face three time pressures:
- You're holding the cohort's maths progression across 7 year groups — and the calculation policy depends on every teacher doing it the same way
- You're rebuilding documents that hundreds of other Maths Leads have rebuilt — calculation policies, manipulative inventories, MTC strategies, fluency routines
- You're delivering CPD to colleagues whose maths confidence varies enormously — including some who carry their own maths anxiety from school. One-off CPD doesn't shift this
A $4.99/month membership pays for itself in the first CPD session you don't have to plan from zero. Plus full access to the rest of the catalog: 1028 resources across 28 subjects, including extensive maths curriculum content for every year group, the Y6 SATs Prep Pack covering Arithmetic, Reasoning Paper 2, Reasoning Paper 3, and the question-stem flashcards.
For headteachers
If your Maths Lead is reading this, three things you can do that genuinely help:
- Protect their non-contact time. A Maths Lead with no time to monitor, plan CPD, or run manipulatives audits is just a class teacher with extra paperwork. The role only develops the school if there's protected time.
- Fund manipulatives properly. Most schools have £500-£2000 of manipulatives somewhere. They need refreshing every 3-5 years. Underfunding manipulatives undercuts every concrete-pictorial-abstract approach the Maths Lead is trying to embed.
- Back consistent calculation policy decisions. When the Maths Lead chooses a calculation policy or scheme, the school commits to it for at least 3 years. Don't change because of one cohort's MTC data — embedding takes 18-24 months.
Related toolkits
Three other coordinator toolkits sit alongside the Maths Lead Toolkit, following the same operational-rather-than-curricular pattern:
- English Lead Toolkit — the mirror pack for the English Lead role
- Assessment Coordinator Toolkit — annual calendar, moderation, statutory deadlines, parent meetings
- Music Coordinator Toolkit — non-specialist support, repertoire banks, productions, instrument management
All four follow the same structure: whole-school progression doc, operational running-the-role docs, CPD for class teachers, handover doc, and something specific to the role's hardest problem.
