Grade 5 Resources for UK Primary

Grade 5 is the final year of elementary school in most US districts. Children consolidate elementary skills before middle school: fluent reading of complex texts, structured multi-paragraph writing, mastery of fractions and decimals, and emerging algebraic thinking. Many districts assess for middle-school placement in Grade 5.

Age: 10–11 years Key Stage: Upper Elementary US equivalent: Year 6
Key milestone

End-of-year state assessments. Decimal operations and fraction multiplication/division mastery. Many districts use end-of-year reading benchmarks (DRA Level 50, Fountas & Pinnell Level V) for middle school readiness.

What Grade 5 children are learning

📚 English curriculum focus

  • Reading literature — quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences; determine theme and summarize
  • Reading informational text — quote accurately; determine two or more main ideas and explain how they are supported by key details
  • Writing — produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience; conduct short research projects that use several sources
  • Speaking and listening — engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions; summarize a written text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats
  • Language — explain the function of conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections; form and use the perfect verb tenses

🔢 Maths curriculum focus

  • Operations and algebraic thinking — write and interpret numerical expressions; analyze patterns and relationships
  • Number and operations in base ten — understand the place value system; perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and decimals to hundredths
  • Number and operations — fractions — use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions; apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions
  • Measurement and data — convert like measurement units within a given measurement system; represent and interpret data; understand concepts of volume
  • Geometry — graph points on the coordinate plane; classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

Phonics: End-of-year state assessments. Decimal operations and fraction multiplication/division mastery. Many districts use end-of-year reading benchmarks (DRA Level 50, Fountas & Pinnell Level V) for middle school readiness.

About the UK National Curriculum

The UK National Curriculum (2014) defines what state-funded primary schools in England teach. Children move through Key Stages: Reception (EYFS, age 4-5), Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2, ages 5-7), Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3-4, ages 7-9), and Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5-6, ages 9-11).

Each year group has age-related expectations (AREs) for reading, writing, mathematics, and other subjects. LessonKind resources are organised by US grade level for the global brand, but on these UK pages we surface the equivalent content for each UK year group.

Key statutory checkpoints

  • Phonics Screening Check (Year 1, June) — 40 words to decode
  • Multiplication Tables Check (Year 4, June) — 25 questions, all times tables to 12×12
  • Key Stage 1 statutory teacher assessment (Year 2)
  • Key Stage 2 SATs (Year 6, May) — Reading, GPS, Maths; writing teacher-assessed
