Anifeiliaid Cymru — Welsh Wildlife
Species native to or significant in Wales
- ▶ Y Barcud Coch (the Red Kite): symbol of Wales. Once nearly extinct in Britain, the red kite survived only in Wales. Now common again thanks to reintroduction programmes.
- ▶ Y Ddraig Goch (the Red Dragon): the dragon on the Welsh flag. Symbol of Welsh identity since at least the 9th century.
- ▶ Y Carlwm (the Stoat): white in winter (ermine), brown in summer. Found throughout Wales.
- ▶ Y Crëyr Glas (the Grey Heron): common on Welsh rivers and coasts.
- ▶ Y Morfil (the Whale): Wales has some of Britain's best cetacean watching — dolphins and porpoises off the Pembrokeshire coast.
- ▶ Defaid Mynydd Cymru (Welsh Mountain Sheep): the Welsh Mountain breed is perfectly adapted to harsh upland terrain. There are 10 million sheep in Wales — 3 sheep for every person!
