Mathematics and Numeracy AoLE structure
- 1 Mathemateg a Rhifedd (Mathematics and Numeracy) One of the six AoLEs in the Curriculum for Wales. Covers both pure mathematics and the cross-curricular numeracy strand that runs through all AoLEs.
- 2 Five elements of numeracy The numeracy strand has five elements: Procedural Fluency, Conceptual Understanding, Communication with Symbols, Logical Reasoning, and Strategic Competence. These apply across all subjects, not just maths.
- 3 Numeracy across the curriculum One of three mandatory cross-curricular skills in CfW (with literacy and digital competence). Every teacher is a numeracy teacher — geography teachers use data, history teachers use timelines, science teachers measure.
- 4 Financial literacy A distinct strand within Mathematics and Numeracy in CfW — covering budgeting, saving, understanding value, and consumer decisions. More prominent than in the English NC.
- 5 Welsh mathematical vocabulary Mathematical vocabulary in Welsh is explicitly valued in CfW. Our Gaeilge — Mata vocabulary mat works as a cross-reference; see also our Cymraeg Mathemateg resources.
- 6 Progression steps As with all CfW AoLEs, mathematics uses progression steps (not year-group-specific targets) — learners are expected to progress through steps at different rates.
Learning objective
