Book Recommendations

Recommended books for primary classrooms โ€” curated by year group, plus trade-magazine picks for your own CPD reading.

By a qualified primary teacher ยท Last updated 6 August 2026

Every book below has been read in a real primary classroom, not pulled from a bestseller feed. We've grouped them by year band so you can go straight to what your class needs, and added a short note on why each one earns its place on the list โ€” read-aloud value, vocabulary stretch, or just the book that gets reluctant readers to pick up a second one.

EYFS & KS1 (Ages 3โ€“7)

The Gruffalo โ€” Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler

The single most reliable whole-class read-aloud in the EYFS canon โ€” rhyming text supports early phonics, and the repeated refrain gets even reluctant joiners-in speaking up.

Owl Babies โ€” Martin Waddell & Patrick Benson

Short enough for a single sitting, gentle enough for anxious starters โ€” a genuine go-to for settling a new Reception class in September.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea โ€” Judith Kerr

Simple sentence structure makes it a favourite for shared reading and sequencing work in Year 1.

Dogger โ€” Shirley Hughes

A genuinely useful PSHE hook โ€” sharing, loss and kindness โ€” that year 1 and 2 classes respond to every time.

Lower KS2 (Years 3โ€“4)

The Iron Man โ€” Ted Hughes

Short chapters and vivid, muscular language make it an excellent step up into chapter books, and a genuine hit for reluctant boy readers specifically.

Charlotte's Web โ€” E.B. White

Still the benchmark for teaching theme and character development at this age โ€” friendship, mortality, loyalty, without ever feeling heavy-handed.

The Worst Witch โ€” Jill Murphy

Reliable series hook for Year 3/4 โ€” once they finish book one, most classes want the whole set, which is exactly what you want from a class reader.

Cogheart โ€” Peter Bunzl

Steampunk adventure that punches above its reading-age weight for pace โ€” good for stretching confident LKS2 readers ahead of UKS2 texts.

Upper KS2 (Years 5โ€“6)

Skellig โ€” David Almond

The text most UKS2 teachers reach for when they want genuine ambiguity and discussion โ€” no tidy answers, which is exactly the point.

Holes โ€” Louis Sachar

Interwoven timelines make it a genuinely useful text for teaching structure and foreshadowing at Year 6, on top of being a page-turner.

Wonder โ€” R.J. Palacio

Multiple narrators give you a ready-made structure for perspective-writing tasks, and the content supports PSHE work on difference and kindness without feeling like a "lesson."

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief โ€” Rick Riordan

Consistently the strongest reluctant-reader hook at this age โ€” mythology tie-ins also make it a useful cross-curricular pairing with a Greek History unit.

For teachers: CPD & subject-specific reading

Alongside classroom titles, plenty of teachers keep up with subject-specific trade magazines and journals for their own CPD โ€” TES-style practice pieces, subject association bulletins, and general education press. If that's you, a digital newsstand subscription is often cheaper and less clutter than several print subscriptions.

Teacher CPD reading

Magzter GOLD โ€” Education & Trade Magazines

Unlimited access to thousands of magazines and journals on one subscription, including education and subject-specific trade titles โ€” a genuinely cheaper way to keep up with CPD reading than buying print issues one at a time.

FAQ

How were these books chosen?

Every title on this list has been used as a class reader or read-aloud in a real primary classroom. We prioritise books that work in practice โ€” that hold whole-class attention, support a specific curriculum link, or reliably convert reluctant readers โ€” over generic "bestseller" lists.

Are these lists matched to the UK curriculum or US grade bands?

Year bands are given in UK terms (EYFS, KS1, LKS2, UKS2) with the equivalent US grade range noted in each heading, so the list is usable on either side of the Atlantic.

Will you add more titles?

Yes โ€” this page is reviewed and expanded periodically. If you have a class-tested recommendation we've missed, let us know via the feedback page.
