Six major world religions
- 1 Christianity The world's largest religion (2.4 billion). Based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Holy book: the Bible. Place of worship: church. Key festivals: Christmas, Easter.
- 2 Islam 1.8 billion followers (Muslims). Founded by the Prophet Muhammad in Arabia in the 7th century CE. Holy book: the Qur'an. Place of worship: mosque. Key festivals: Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha. Five Pillars.
- 3 Judaism 14 million followers (Jews). The oldest of the three Abrahamic religions. Holy book: the Torah. Place of worship: synagogue. Key festivals: Passover, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah.
- 4 Hinduism 1.2 billion followers. The world's oldest religion — no single founder. Holy texts include the Vedas and Upanishads. Place of worship: mandir (temple). Key festivals: Diwali, Holi.
- 5 Buddhism 520 million followers. Founded by Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) in the 5th century BCE in present-day Nepal. No god — a path to enlightenment (Nirvana). Place of worship: temple or monastery.
- 6 Sikhism 30 million followers (Sikhs). Founded by Guru Nanak in the Punjab (1469). Holy book: the Guru Granth Sahib. Place of worship: gurdwara. Key belief: equality of all people.
