Community and volunteering
- 1 What is a community? A group of people who share something — a place, interest, identity, or purpose. Family, street, school. Wider: town, faith group, sport.
- 2 What communities need Trust. Mutual support. Shared spaces. Communication. Active members who contribute, not just receive.
- 3 Volunteering Giving your time, skills, or energy without being paid, to benefit others. Litter picking. Food bank sorting. Visiting elderly neighbours.
- 4 Why people volunteer Feel useful and connected. Develop skills. Meet people. Make a difference. Research shows volunteers report higher wellbeing.
- 5 Environmental action Litter picks. Tree planting. School gardens. Pollinator meadows. Community actions that benefit the environment and build connections.
- 6 How children can contribute School council. Eco-council. Peer reading. Helping younger children. Raising money for a local charity.
- 7 Charities Non-profit organisations serving a cause or community. Many rely on volunteers. Large: Oxfam, British Red Cross, RSPCA. Local: food banks, community centres.
