Who was St David? — Pwy oedd Dewi Sant?

  1. 1 St David (Dewi Sant) c.500–589 CE The patron saint of Wales. Born in Pembrokeshire. Founded a monastery at Menevia (now St Davids — the smallest city in Great Britain). Known for his austere lifestyle — water, bread, and vegetables only.
  2. 2 Y Ddraig Goch — The Red Dragon Wales's national symbol, one of the oldest national flags in the world. Appears in the Mabinogion (Welsh mythology). The dragon has been associated with Wales since at least the 9th century.
  3. 3 Cenhinen Bedr — Daffodil The daffodil is the national flower of Wales, worn on St David's Day. A confusion with the leek (cenhinen) may explain the association — both cenhinen (leek) and cenhinen Bedr (daffodil) sound similar.
  4. 4 Yr Eisteddfod Wales's national cultural festival — competitions in poetry, music, and drama entirely in Welsh. The National Eisteddfod is held annually. School Eisteddfodau happen throughout the year.
