What you'll need
- Sturdy cardboard (A5 or larger)
- Scissors
- Strong thread or thin yarn for warp
- Assorted yarns, wool, ribbons, strips of fabric for weft
- Blunt tapestry needle or lolly stick
How to do it
- Cut notches along the top and bottom of the cardboard every 1cm.
- Thread strong yarn through the notches to create the warp — tape the starting end at the back.
- Thread a blunt needle with a contrasting yarn.
- Weave under the first warp, over the second, under the third, alternating across the row.
- Push each row down tightly to build up the textile.
- To add new colours: simply add a new length of yarn.
- When finished, carefully slide off the loom and tie the loose ends.
💡 Tips
The tighter the warp, the more stable the weave. Encourage mixing of textures — combine ribbon, chunky wool, metallic thread, and thin yarn for interesting effects. This is calming, meditative work.
