About cloze tests
A cloze test (also called gap-fill) removes selected words from a passage; children fill in the gaps. They're used for reading comprehension, vocabulary practice, grammar drilling (e.g. fill in the connective), and assessment. Effective in primary from Y2 upwards.
How to choose the right mode
- Every Nth word — classic comprehension; tests overall reading. Use N=7 for KS2, N=10 for KS3, N=5 for tougher.
- Nouns / verbs / adjectives — targets word classes. Useful for grammar work.
- Connectives — practises cohesion and how clauses link. Great for Y4-Y6.
- Words 6+ letters — focuses on richer vocabulary; useful for vocabulary expansion.
Word bank or no word bank?
Showing the removed words at the bottom of the page (a "word bank") makes the activity easier — children pick from the options. Without the bank, children must produce the right word from memory, which is harder but better for assessment.
