About knowledge organisers
A knowledge organiser is a single sheet summarising the most important things to know about a topic. They're standard practice in primary schools — teachers send them home at the start of a unit so children (and parents) know what's coming.
What goes on a knowledge organiser?
- Topic title and a 1-2 sentence overview
- Key vocabulary — the technical words children need to learn (with definitions)
- Key facts — the must-know information
- Timeline (for history) or process (for science) — sequence of events
- Key people / places — the named figures children need to know about
- Big questions — open-ended questions to think about during the topic
How to use them
Send home at the start of a unit so families know what's being learned. Display in classrooms as a reference. Use as a low-stakes quizzing tool ("close your books — what does aqueduct mean?"). Use as a check-in at the end of the unit ("what can you remember?").
