Wax Resist Watercolour

Draw or write with white wax crayon (or candle wax) on white paper — the marks are invisible. Paint over with watercolour washes and the wax resists the paint, revealing the drawing. Magical effect children love.

What you'll need

  • White wax crayons or white candles
  • White cartridge paper
  • Watercolour paints
  • Paintbrushes (flat wash brush)
  • Water pots
  • Aprons

How to do it

  1. Using a white wax crayon, draw a picture or pattern on white paper. Press firmly.
  2. The drawing should be nearly invisible at this stage.
  3. Mix watercolour paint with plenty of water to create thin, transparent washes.
  4. Paint over the entire page with broad, sweeping brushstrokes.
  5. Watch as the wax drawing reveals itself — the paint beads on the waxy areas.
  6. Use multiple colours for a more dramatic effect.
💡 Tips Works best with pure watercolour, not poster paint (which is too opaque). Oil pastels create an even stronger resist effect — use them for more vibrant results.
