What you'll need
- Black fine-liner or gel pen (0.5mm)
- White cartridge paper or watercolour paper, cut to squares
- Pencil and ruler (for initial grid/borders)
How to do it
- Draw a square or organic shape as the border — this is the 'tile'.
- Inside the shape, lightly pencil in 2-3 irregular curves to divide the space into sections.
- Choose a different pattern for each section: lines, dots, waves, bricks, scales.
- Fill each section with the pattern, keeping it neat and consistent.
- No shading needed for first attempts — the pattern contrast is enough.
- For older children: add pencil shading to create depth.
💡 Tips
There are no mistakes in Zentangle — every mark is intentional. Show children a grid of 20 simple patterns to choose from. The meditative quality makes this excellent for transitions or calming after PE.
