What you'll need
- Air dry clay (approximately 100g per child)
- Plastic mats or boards
- Water in small pots
- Wooden clay tools or lolly sticks
- Poster paint and varnish for when dry
How to do it
- Roll a piece of clay into a smooth ball.
- Press both thumbs into the centre of the ball to create a hollow.
- Pinch the walls between thumbs and fingers, rotating the pot as you go.
- Work to even the walls to roughly the same thickness (about 1cm).
- Smooth cracks with a wet finger.
- Leave to dry on a flat surface for 24-48 hours — avoid radiators (cracks).
- When fully dry, paint with 2 coats of poster paint. Varnish to seal.
💡 Tips
A ball the size of a golf ball makes a good first pot. Cracked pots can be repaired with a water-clay slip before drying. These make beautiful gifts — a classic activity that children remember.
