What you'll need
- Air dry clay
- Plastic clay mat
- Acrylic or poster paint: bright colours + gold
- Varnish
- Electric tea lights (for use in school)
How to do it
- Roll clay into a ball about the size of a small tangerine.
- Press thumbs into the centre to create a deep bowl (pinch pot technique).
- Pull one side out into a small spout shape — this is where the wick traditionally goes.
- Smooth the surface with wet fingers.
- Leave to dry 24-48 hours.
- Decorate with bright patterns: geometric shapes, flowers, dots using acrylic paint.
- Add gold detail when the base paint is dry.
- Varnish to seal and place an electric tea light inside.
💡 Tips
Real wax tea lights are not permitted in most schools — use battery-powered LED tea lights. The electric versions actually look more dramatic indoors and are safer for display.
