What you'll need
- Two straight sticks of similar length (collected outdoors)
- Wool or yarn in several colours
- Natural materials: feathers, leaves, grasses, seed heads
- String to lash sticks together
How to do it
- Collect two sticks. Lay them in a cross and tie firmly where they intersect.
- Tie a length of wool to the centre, leaving a tail.
- Wrap the wool around each stick arm in turn, going around and looping underneath each time.
- After several rounds, change colour by tying on a new length.
- Continue outward in concentric diamond shapes.
- When the weaving is done, tie on natural materials as decoration.
💡 Tips
This works beautifully as an outdoor learning activity — the sticks come from the school grounds, and the children can weave in situ. No cost, no prep, and the results look genuinely beautiful.
