What you'll need
- Smooth flat river pebbles (collected or purchased)
- White acrylic paint (base coat)
- Acrylic paint in various colours
- Fine-detail brush
- Acrylic paint markers (for fine detail)
- Outdoor varnish or Mod Podge sealer
How to do it
- Wash and dry pebbles thoroughly.
- Apply a base coat of white acrylic — this makes colours pop on dark stone.
- When dry, draw a light pencil design.
- Paint the main design with acrylic paint.
- When dry, add detail with fine brushes or paint markers.
- Apply 2-3 coats of outdoor varnish or Mod Podge to seal.
💡 Tips
Cheap pebbles from garden centres are perfect. Acrylic paint markers (like Posca pens) are perfect for the fine detail stage. Varnish is essential for outdoor-quality finish. The 'kindness rocks' idea (hiding painted pebbles for others to find) is wonderfully motivating.',
