What you'll need

  • Air dry clay or natural clay
  • Compost
  • Wildflower or native seeds
  • Water
  • Bowls for mixing
  • Optional: dried flowers or grass for decoration

How to do it

  1. Mix 5 parts compost to 1 part clay in a bowl.
  2. Add a small amount of water to help it bind — it should hold a shape without sticking.
  3. Add a pinch of seeds (wildflower mixes work well) to the mix.
  4. Roll into balls about the size of a large marble.
  5. Leave to dry in a cool place for 24-48 hours.
  6. Plant by pressing into soil, or leave for dry weather to throw into bare ground.
💡 Tips Use native wildflower seeds — they attract pollinators and are suited to local conditions. This makes a lovely take-home gift and links to science units on plants, habitats, and ecosystems.
