Papier Mâché Bowls

Layer torn newspaper strips over a balloon or bowl mould to create a lightweight sculptural form. One of the most satisfying craft processes — children can build, paint, and decorate their own bowls over several sessions.

What you'll need

  • Newspaper (lots — torn into strips, not cut)
  • PVA glue mixed with water 50:50
  • Balloons or upturned bowls covered in cling film
  • Poster paint and varnish for finishing
  • Paintbrushes
  • Sandpaper (fine, for smoothing when dry)

How to do it

  1. Tear newspaper into strips roughly 2cm x 10cm — tearing not cutting gives better edges.
  2. Brush the mould with petroleum jelly or cover with cling film (for easy release).
  3. Dip a strip in PVA mix, squeeze off excess, lay onto the mould.
  4. Apply 3-4 layers, alternating the direction of strips each layer. Let each layer dry before the next.
  5. When fully dry (24 hours), remove from mould. Trim edges.
  6. Paint with 2 coats of white gesso or primer, then decorate.
💡 Tips Allow at least 3 sessions: building, painting, varnishing. This is genuinely one of the most rewarding craft processes — the finished objects feel substantial and professional.
